Potato is
the largest non-grain food crop of the world being consumed by
1 billion people worldwide. In recent times, there has been a
geographical shift in the production pattern of Potato. From being
the staple diet of Europe alone, Potato has made major strides
into the food habits of the peoples of the Asian continent in
general and the Indian Sub-continent in particular.
In the South
Asian context, potato has been gaining prominence as an important
source of food for the growing populations of the region.
With an area
of 1.40 million hectares and an annual production of 27 million
tons, India is a major potato-producing nation of the world, accounting
for almost 9% of the world production.
In the
South Asian region Potato is a major cash crop. However fragmentation
of land holdings and rising input costs have compelled farmers
to look for opportunities to increase unit productivity.
Typically
Seed costs alone, account for 50% of the inputs in a Potato crop
and while the farmer has a level of control in the volume of inputs
he utilises and the farm practices he adopts, it is critically
important for him to ensure that he uses high quality seed since
this is the basic factor in raising a successful crop.
Hence it becomes imperative to adopt high quality - high yielding
Seed Potato to increase per unit productivity. This is where enabling
